Very sorry could not make it to the gala in mid-May. Mr. & Mrs. Whiting deserve all the accolades. We're all better people because they were our teachers.

Looking at all these pictures brought back a lot of great memories. We were very fortunate to have Mr. Whiting and his love of the theatre. I wish I could have attended the 50th anniversary. It's nice to see high school kids still interested in this and still performing Shakespearean plays.

Nice pictures (we all look so young). I'm glad some traditions still carry on - we all had such a good time and learned a great deal. Dorky as it may be, I still carry my tattered Shakespearean Society membership card in my wallet, given in 1981. It's still good for some laugh and a few tall tales at bars.

To all members, past and present, I am please to raise my glass and hail the society for all its achievements in keeping Shakespeare alive in central NY for 50 years.

The 2008 presentation of The Taming of the Shrew and the alumni dinner was another great milestone for the many of us older members (1972)and a greater treat to meet the newest members of our Shakespearean troupe. Carry on and remember - This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man. Farewell, my blessing season this in thee! I want to thank all those who came to the 50th gala... The students were in awe of those who had been on stage before them and were moved by the spontaneous long applause they received upon entering the cafeteria at dinner. So many of them truly felt what it was to be a member of the Shakespearean Society and felt that Saturday night's audience was the best they ever had. The students said....They laughed!! a lot!!!...they understood the jokes!! They really got it!!! And, at the same time, the young actors were put to ease because they felt the appreciation from those who had come so far to see them perform and to share experiences. It is a hope that those who can, will continue to come and those who weren't able, to find some time in the future to attend a performance. It was an amazing night. Hopefully, as time allows Louise will add more photos... Great job Louise.

Dear Thespians, Congratulations to the Whitings, Allens and Felker-Halls - your dedication to us is a gift! You've given us treasures forever - too few teens will ever know the joy of performing (or stage managing, as in my case) and supporting Shakespearean productions. We worked hard and we loved it. Enjoy the celebrations and reunion tonight. I'll be with you in spirit!

Hello and Greetings to you all who've gathered for this fabled event! In sooth I am sad that I must miss the amassing of so many goodly and merry fellow thespians. Our days together were always merry and our nights - ! We capered, we danced, we had eyes of youth, we wrote verse, we spoke holiday, and always smelled of April and May. We were "the happy few" and also the lucky few that were able to lend our poor talents to the production of truly superior theater, and in returned were awarded with a glimpse into the the workings of the mind of a genius. We were exposed to the best of plays, on our own stage and in our trips to Stratford. We were given duties that stretched our time, energy, and abilities, were reprimanded when not getting the job done to the perfection expected, and then rewarded with quiet praise and the enormous feeling of accomplishment at pulling off seemingly hopeless task. Thank you so much, Mr Whiting, for enriching our lives a million times over for having known and worked with you. I enjoyed making many costumes for the actors and finding enough black leotards for all the guys! I also did makeup and specialized in "beards". The students made me an Honorary Member of the Shakespearean Society(in 1981 I think) and gave me "The Complete Works of Shakespeare".

As a member of the Class of '64, I never had a big role on stage. I recall auditioning and landing the part of the Friar in Romeo & Juliet. Imagine my disappointment when I had to relinquish the role to take on a part-time job after school to earn money for college. Yet, the intellectual and social opportunities the Society offered supplemented what Bill Whiting was teaching in his English classes. Thank you Mr. Whiting! And thanks for the invitation to attend the gala celebration of 50 years (really??), but I will not be able to attend because of a prior commitment. Break a leg!

Here we were...a bunch of high school kids doing Shakespeare...and loving it. What a wonderful experience it was and what wonderful memories the Sshakespearean Society still brings. Thank you to Bill and Ruth Whiting for this and everything else they did to help us off to a great start. And thanks to all who followed for keeping the Shakespearean Society going strong over the years. The play's still the thing!

Mr. Whiting formed the Society when we were Freshmen, in the Spring of 1958, and it was great fun from the start. We didn't have many props, but we put on some good performances, mostly single scenes from selected plays the first year or so. In 1960 we performed the full Hamlet, with Rich Folmer as Hamlet, and it was very good. We all learned a lot of Shakespeare, and I still remember most of the lines 50 years later. John LeRoux

So many fond memories. I count myself fortunate to be an original member. The experience was invaluable. I taught English for many years and incorporated much of what I learned into my classroom. I have also pursued acting as a lifelong hobby as a result of my start on the stage at Homer High. Best wishes to all. Sorry, we will be out of town for the celebration.

I still remember my first audition (approx 1963). Mr. Whiting had me project till I felt my voice bounce off the back wall of the auditorium. I decided right then to become a famous actor. I haven't reached that goal yet. But there is still hope (surely, I am not too old).

What a worthy and wonderful cause for celebration!!! Bill Whiting and all those who followed in his footsteps are to be congratulated and deeply appreciated for their contributions of time and talent to the students of HCHS and community. Those were wonderful times for many of us lucky enough to be involved in the Shakespearian Society. Bill Whiting and Ruth added a rare and marvelous dimension to our young lives then by introducing us to the wonders of Shakespeare and the joy of working together on both sides of the curtain. Some of the earlier Society members (a motley variety of actors, grips, musicians, costume designers, etc.) were members of the Class of l961. I doubt there were many other youngsters of our generation who had such high-minded, intellectual experiences .... fun too!!! Bill Whiting was our teacher and well- loved director. Our l961 Odyssey was purposefully and lovingly dedicated to him and to the Shakespearian Society. I am personally pleased and proud that you chose to use a picture from our era for your cover page. In my mind's eye, I can still picture us outside HCHS on that sunny day some 47 years ago posing for photo after photo in those beautiful costumes for our yearbook. I will forever be grateful for my membership in such a splendid, worthwhile organization! Have a lovely party ... wish I could be there!
